PM to Launch Landmark ‘Farmer Card’ Program on Pohela Boishakh
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman is set to inaugurate the national Farmer Card Program on the occasion of Pohela Boishakh, marking a major milestone in the government’s commitment to digitizing the agricultural landscape. The Prime Minister will officially launch the program and distribute cards among farmers in Tangail Sadar Upazila.
The initiative follows a high-level meeting held Tuesday at the Secretariat between the Prime Minister and the Farmer Card formulation cell under the Cabinet Division. The project is being introduced as a pre-piloting phase to fulfill key election commitments.
Digital Empowerment for 21,500 Farmers
According to the Prime Minister’s Additional Press Secretary, Atikur Rahman Rumon, the program will roll out simultaneously in 11 upazilas. In this inaugural phase, 21,500 farmers will receive financial assistance directly through mobile banking.
The Farmer Card is designed to function as a standard bank debit card, specifically tailored for:
Target Sectors: Agriculture, Fisheries, and Livestock.
Beneficiaries: Landless, marginal, and small farmers will receive an annual incentive of BDT 2,500.
Usage: Credits can be used for purchasing fertilizer, seeds, pesticides, and animal feed.
The pilot program includes Tangail Sadar, Kamalapur and Boda (Panchagarh), Shibganj (Bogura), Shailkupa (Jhenaidah), Nesarabad (Pirojpur), Teknaf (Cox’s Bazar), Adarsha Sadar (Cumilla), Islampur (Jamalpur), Goalanda (Rajbari), and Juri (Moulvibazar)
